About Us
We are an online community of women of color and nonbinary people of color in ecology, evolutionary biology, and allied environmental fields (find us on social media with #WOCinEEB).
We began in 2020 when a like-minded group of women of color came together to create a Slack community as a way to connect. Many of us found each other on #ScienceTwitter and recognized a need for an online community to help combat isolation we often felt as “the only” in our academic departments. The Covid-19 pandemic, global movements for racial justice, and shifting political climate only intensified the need for community.
Over the next few years, WOCinEEB founders put together a list of WOC in EEB seminar speakers to help diversify EEB conferences and piloted two mentoring programs: a 1-on-1 Mentoring Program and a Peer Mentoring Program to enable our community members to support each other. In 2023, we received NSF funding to support our first in-person Networks of Success Conference!
We hope to continue expanding our programs and supporting WOC in EEB.
